NY. Pregones Theater: El Apagón/The Blackout

Pregones Theater continues its 2011 Spring Season with a brand new staging of El Apagón/The Blackout from April 8th -17th, 2011. A new cast, new sets and a new direction energizes this audience-favorite with a vibrant New York street flare that is sure to move audiences of all generations. A true classic of the contemporary Latino theater scene, this new staging celebrates the passion and the dreams that continue to make the Latino voice an essential part of our national identity.

Heralded as “The quintessential Boricua play” by critics and audiences alike, El Apagón/The Blackout is Pregones Theater’s adaptation of the story La noche que volvimos a ser gente (The Night We Became People Again) by José Luis González, performed in Spanish and English, and set to the beat of popular Latin songs from the 1950’s and 60’s.

While riding the New York subway uptown from Brooklyn to El Barrio, and eager to witness the birth of his firstborn, a Puerto Rican factory worker and his best friend Trompoloco are caught in the Great Northeastern Blackout.

"Illuminated by miracles and music, El Apagón/The Blackout whips through very funny riffs on assembly-line work, the panicky subway crowd, the miracle of the baby, and the blaze of stars." - The New York Times.

A paean to the courage, humor and humanity of migrant experience, the show is one of Pregones’ most enduring and popular creations, with hundreds of performances throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Europe.

New staging directed by Jorge B. Merced with musical direction by Desmar Guevara. Featuring: Omar Pérez and Johary Ramos. Musicians: Waldo Chávez (bass), Desmar Guevara (keyboard) and Alberto Toro (flute).
