About the Play
The story takes place in Mexico at the turn of the 20th century. A young Xochil Indian girl fell desperately in love with a man of Spanish lineage, and the great Xochil river has never forgiven her. Twenty years later she is married, and now the river will take its revenge upon her. Her husband will betray her, she will go mad, and the river will torment her until she sacrifices her only child, Sara. She will forever weep.
Writer-Composer Hector Armienta brings his National Endowment for the Arts awarded production to the New York stage after successfull presentations in San Jose California. The level of talent combined with the story-line of La Llorona promises to create a unique and powerful theater going experience. Audiences have been riveted by Armienta's story, lyrics and amazing creation of a musical drama that so beautifully walks the line between an opera and a musical.
The production is anchored by an exceptional technical team: Musical Director Juan Pablo Horcasitas, Set Designer Yanko Bakulic, Light Designer Alex Moore, Coreographer Basil Rojas, Assistant Director Kristoffer Infante, Stage Manager Nancy Pizarro, Costume Design Lina Sarello and some of New York's most accomplished talent: Bill Blechingberg, Tamra Paselk, Catherine Rothrock, Xandra Leigh Stegmaier, Venuz Maria Delmar, Linnea Larsdotter Mikkela, Cori Robinson, and Harlan Short.
Musicians: Alice Hamlet, Elizabeth Janzen, Donald Moy, Sophia Vastek, and Akira Yamamoto.
