Semíramis llega disfrazada de hombre al campo de batalla de Batra y propone un plan de ataque contra el ejército del príncipe Alejandro. Su plan les dará la victoria y expandirá los terrenos del gran imperio de Asiria.

Este el comienzo de una cadena de eventos protagonizados por Semíramis, mujer ambiciosa llena de un cúmulo de vicios y motivada por un concepto distorsionado de lo que es la justicia, el amor y la sexualidad. Así, Semíramis despertará una red de pasiones, secretos y traiciones dentro de la corte del Rey Nino y no parará hasta caer víctima de su propia ambición. Esta joya teatral casi desconocida es una de las pioneras del género del horror del siglo de oro español.

Sobre el autor

Cristóbal de Virués nació en Valencia a mediados del siglo XVI dentro de una familia de intelectuales. Fue miembro de La Academia de los Nocturnos y posteriormente viajó a Italia, donde vivió por muchos años y recibió una gran influencia del Renacimiento Italiano. Fue capitán del ejército español y luchó en las batallas de Lepanto y Milán. Siendo un hombre de armas y de letras, Virués empleó sus obras para criticar de forma drástica la vida cortesana, la monarquía tirana y la figura abusiva del rey y de aquellos que lo rodeaban. Sin embargo, la importancia de Virués como escritor radica en su búsqueda de una nueva dramaturgia que une la tradición del teatro clásico con las necesidades de un teatro moderno. Así, con este difícil equilibrio entre lo antiguo y lo moderno, Cristóbal de Virués permanece como un pionero que desafió la estructura dramática de su época.

Sobre el director

Diego M. Chiri es un actor, escritor y director peruano que reside en Nueva York. Desde el 2006 vive en los Estados Unidos, donde ha realizado sus estudios universitarios. Chiri se graduó del Community College de Filadelfia (2009) y de la Universidad Bucknell (2012) con honores Cum Laude en las carreras de Cine y Teatro, con una concentración en dirección de escena. Chiri ha dirigido las obras Ashes (2010), The Zoo Story (2011) y el documental Devising the American Family (2012), esta última grabada en el festival Fringe de Edimburgo. Chiri también ha colaborado en crear colectivamente las obras The Bacchae (2011) y Really Trying Here (2011). En Nueva York, Chiri ha dirigido Fin de semana (2014) en Repertorio Español y la lectura dramatizada de Gazoline (2015) en IATI Theater. Chiri es miembro de la sociedad de honor Phi Theta Kappa y ha recibido las becas Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship, The CCP Foundation Scholarship y recientemente The Van Lier Fellowship. Chiri trabaja en la casa productora TimeLine Video de Nueva York.

Sobre la producción

Esta producción de La Gran Semíramis es su estreno en un país americano. Solo se tienen registros de 2 producciones en España, la más conocida de ellas por el director Ricart Salvat en 1991. La obra dramática de Cristóbal de Virués es casi desconocida, por lo que no hay muchas oportunidades de llevarlas a escena. Pero Chiri ha dirigido una propuesta que mezcla actuación, coreografía, proyecciones y un vestuario y escenografía de estilo barroco que han generado solamente críticas favorables. El resultado final es un estudio sobre la ambición, el poder, el mundo cortesano y de cómo el concepto de la fortuna influye sobre las decisiones y vidas de los personajes.

La obra cuenta con las actuaciones de Maite Uzal (España) como Semíramis, Alfonso Rey (Venezuela) como el Rey Nino, Gerardo Gudiño (Argentina) como el General Menón, Sergio Freijo (España) como el Príncipe Zameis Ninias, Christian López Lamelas (España) como el soldado Celabo, Paul Montoya (Colombia) como el cortesano Zopiro, Pablo Andrade (Venezuela) como el cortesano Diarco y Noelle Mauri (España) como el prólogo y la Diosa Fortuna.

Repertorio Español encabeza las compañías de teatro hispanas en Nueva York desde 1968, fundada por Gilberto Zaldívar y René Buch. La producción de La Gran Semíramis es presentada por la beca Van Lier y auspiciada por el New York Community Trust. El programa Van Lier es una de las becas que ofrece Repertorio Español para brindar la oportunidad a directores teatrales Hispanos jóvenes para desarrollar su destreza y presentar producciones profesionales. A través de este mismo programa, Chiri dirigió el año pasado la obra Fin de semana de Julio Ramón Ribeyro en el aniversario 20 de la muerte de Ribeyro.

El teatro venezolano de fiesta: Encuentro con Francis Rueda en el Teatro Bolívar

La actriz, emblema del teatro venezolano, celebra 50 años 

en las tablas 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 y 30 de agosto, 2015   

Encuentro con Francis Rueda, un espectáculo donde la primera actriz muestra su profesionalismo, su pasión por el escenario, al  encarnar ocho mujeres, ocho personajes, del teatro universal y nacional, se presenta durante dos fines de semana: 21, 22, 23, 28, 29 y 30 de agosto, 6:00 pm, en el Teatro Simón Bolívar, ubicado entre las esquinas de Las Monjas y Principal, en las instalaciones del antiguo Cine Rialto, lado oeste de la Plaza Bolívar, en el centro de Caracas.

La profesión, los fantasmas, el ser otro

Francis Rueda, en una jornada confesional, personifica ocho mujeres teatrales, con la fuerza y el vigor de su versatilidad  interpretativa, en una maravillosa fusión entre la ficción y la realidad.  Personajes como “Lucrecia” de Lucrecia, de Gilberto Pinto; “Greta Garbo”, de Oficina Nro. 1 de Miguel Otero Silva; “Laurencia”, deFuenteovejuna, de Lope de Vega; “Ramona” de El rompimiento, de Rafael Guinand; “Medea”, de Medea, de Jean Anouilh-Eurípides; “Clitemnestra”, canción de Carlos Moreán, para los espectáculos de la Cátedra del Humor; “Clov”, de Final de partida, de Samuel Beckett; y “Brusca la rompe fuego”, de Lo que dejó la tempestad, de César Rengifo.

El escenario, esa caja mágica

A los 16 años de edad, Francis Rueda entendió que su razón de ser estaba dentro de esa caja mágica que es el escenario, para poder vivir otras vidas, y afrontar constantes desafíos en el teatro. 

“Creo que  si no se puede enamorar, conmover, o hacer reír a los espectadores, no se puede ser actriz”.  Dijo en una oportunidad la  artista.

Una actriz debe formarse, prepararse, leer, escuchar, tener la sensibilidad suficiente para entender lo que le piden y dar todo de sí misma; y eso es lo que Francis Rueda ha hecho durante 50 años, en el teatro, el cine y la televisión.  Cien obras de teatro, 12 largometrajes y numerosas telenovelas, reafirman su inquebrantable decisión de no abandonar jamás su profesión, mientras le queden fuerzas para cumplir con sus agotadoras exigencias.

En su repertorio figuran autores como Albert Camus, Federico García Lorca, Lope de Vega, Gilberto Pinto, Isaac Chocrón, José Ignacio Cabrujas, César  Rengifo, Román Chalbaud, Eugene  O’ Neill, Carlo Goldoni, Moliere, Tennessee Williams, Griselda Gambaro, Emilio Carballido, Antón Chéjov, Zorrilla, Arthur  Miller, y Nelson Rodrigues, entre otros.

Los  reconocimientos

Francis Rueda, ha obtenido reconocimientos como el Premio Municipal de Teatro, en virtud de sus actuaciones en obras como Agnus Dei, de John Pielmeier (1984); Las Paredes oyen, (1985); La Tempestad, (1986); Una viuda para cuatro, (1987); Te juro Juana que tengo ganas, (1988); Don Juan Tenorio (1989) y Premio Municipal de Teatro por su trayectoria (2005).

Así también ha recibido el Premio Juana Sujo por su trayectoria (1988); Premio Enrique Benshimol por El Burgués gentilhombre (1988);  Premio Juana Sujo por Don Juan Tenorio (1989); Premio María Teresa Castillo por su trayectoria (1989); Premio Nacional del Artista por El Campo (1992) y Oficina Nº 1 (1993).  Premio La Luna del Patio (CELCIT), por su trayectoria (1994);  Homenaje en los Festivales Internacionales de Teatro de Oriente y Occidente, por toda su carrera; Premio  ANAC  2006, por su actuación en la película El Caracazo, de Román Chalbaud.  En 2006, la Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela inauguró una sala de teatro experimental que lleva el nombre de Francis Rueda.

Otros reconocimientos: Orden Andrés Bello, Mérito al Trabajo, en su primera clase; Premio de la Fundación Fernando Gómez, en su tercera edición.  En su periplo teatral ha pertenecido al Teatro Nacional Popular, Fundación Rajatabla, Compañía Municipal de Teatro, Nuevo Grupo y primera actriz, durante nueve años, de la Compañía Nacional de Teatro.  Desde hace 25 años, pertenece a la agrupación Teatro del Duende, fundada en 1955, por Gilberto Pinto (Premio Nacional de Teatro 1999).

Gilberto Pinto y El Teatro del Duende

El Teatro del Duende, nació en el año 1955 bajo la dirección del dramaturgo, director y actor, Gilberto Pinto, integrado por Etelvina Noguera, Luis Márquez Páez, Gustavo González y Marta Lancaste. Con sesenta años en la escena nacional, sus montajes buscan la valoración del arte de actor, a través de la sencillez y limpieza en el escenario de los elementos escenográficos, con el realismo crítico como estética y modelo de un teatro comprometido con la sociedad.

  

Gilberto Pinto (Caracas, parroquia Santa Rosalía, (1929/ Caracas, 7 de diciembre de 2011), estudió con el recordado maestro mexicano Jesús Gómez Obregón, en el Curso de Capacitación Teatral (1948-1951).   

Pinto escribió 19 piezas, muchas de ellas escenificadas por casi toda América Latina y Estados Unidos.  Como pedagogo, formó parte de los más importantes institutos teatrales del país.  En 1999, obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Teatro.

Academy Award winner BENICIO DEL TORO to be honored at the 2015 HOLA Awards

The Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA), the nation’s longest running active arts advocacy organization for Latino actors, is pleased to announce that it will honor Academy Award-winning actor Benicio del Toro with the 2015 Raúl Juliá HOLA Founders Award. He will join Orange is the New Black star Selenis Leyva, Jane The Virgin star Andrea Navedo, Blue Bloods star Marisa Ramírez, and others at the Sixteenth Annual HOLA Awards Gala and Benefit. The HOLA Awards will take place on Monday, October 14, 2015 at 6pm at The Battery Gardens, located on the waterfront overlooking New York Harbor in Battery Park (opposite 17 State Street in lower Manhattan). Sponsorship opportunities are still available. A limited number of individual tickets are available at $150 (if purchased before August 31, 2015) and $175 (if purchased from September 1, 2015 onward).

Benicio del Toro will receive the 2015 Raúl Juliá HOLA Founders Award. Del Toro won the Academy Award for his role in Traffic. Other film credits include Che, The Usual Suspects, Guardians of the Galaxy and Escobar: Paradise Lost. Upcoming films include The Little Prince, Sicario, Weightless, and A Perfect Day.

Andrea Navedo will receive the inaugural 2015 HOLA Elizabeth Peña Breakthrough Artist Award. The award is named after HOLA founding member Elizabeth Peña, who passed away in October 2014. Navedo, an HOLA member, is a veteran of television and film. She is currently playing Xiomara Villanueva in The CW’s Jane The Virgin.

Selenis Leyva will receive the 2015 José Ferrer HOLA Tespis Award. Leyva, a former HOLA Award theater winner, is a veteran of stage and screen. She is best known for playing Gloria Mendoza on the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

Marisa Ramírez will receive the HOLA Excellence in Television Award. Ramírez can currently be seen playing Detective María Báez in the CBS series Blue Bloods.

HOLA is collaborating with R.Evolución Latina on the Dare To Go Beyond Award, an honor for one who is an inspiration to the Latino community and who gives back to it. This year’s inaugural honoree is director, playwright, and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman). In addition to winning the Oscar for Birdman, Dinelaris wrote the book for the Gloria and Emilio Estefan musical On Your Feet!, opening in Broadway this fall. He is also the Co-Executive Director of the Oberon Theatre Ensemble.

Special citations will be given to filmmakers Rocío Llado (for her feature film La novia del libertador), and Julio Ortega and Nitsy Grau for their feature film Medardo). In addition to the above awards HOLA will also continue its annual tradition of honoring the best of Latino theater in New York with noncompetitive awards encompassing multiple winners in each category. HOLA is at the forefront in recognizing the high caliber work being offered across New York’s growing and thriving Latino theatrical stages. On a cold Thursday night, an angel falls into a junkyard. Pretty and Daisy take it to a doctor–but the worst may not be over for this celestial being as it becomes the object of love, obsession and jealousy.

MARTIN BALMACEDA is a co-founder of RHA Theater. He is a director and a performer that has worked at La MaMa, Dixon Place, The New Ohio Theater, INTAR Theater, Studio Theatre in the Row, IATI Theater, The New School University, Repertorio Español, the Pan Asian Repertory Theater Company, The American Dance Institute in Washington D.C., Northwestern University in Evanston IL, and Sarah Lawrence College. Recently, Martin directed Yoleros for Teatrica at IATI Theater, the show will have a second run in December of this year at The Bushwick Starr Theater. HAYDN DIAZ is a cofounder of RHA Theater, the frontman of Profeta Poeta, a Dramatist Guild of America member and IATI Theater’s Literary Manager. He strives to create theater, music and literature that is heavily informed and influenced by the three different disciplines. FIU Honors graduate, B.A in English Literature and Theater. GABRIEL GARCIA has worked through the years with IATI Theater, LaTea, The Fringe, La Estrada, Borrow Group Theater, Prospect Theater, The Park Theater, among others, in various technical roles. He began his theater journey with The Hudson Explioted Theater Company (HExtc) as tech specialist. He studied Devised Theater under Martin Balmaceda in a workshop at IATI theater in 2012. Being part of the music project Profeta Poeta with Haydn Diaz, the three ultimately met on his acting debut of Curing the Void at Dixon Place in 2014. He played Jas in a staged reading done in Spanish of Winter of April at La Nacional in 2015 and has worked with directors Arian Blanco (Cuban Operator Please...), Rene Bush (La Strada), Mariana Carreño (Light of Night), and Ramiro Sandoval (Winter of April). Drummer, poet, musician, sound designer and–above all–artist, Gabriel Garcia received his B.A in philosophy from Rutgers University. 

BETTINA HOFFMANN is a cofounder of RHA Theater and a visual artist originally from Berlin, Germany, living in Montreal, Canada. She creates videos and performances located at the intersection of photography, sculpture, film and dance. In her work she reconstructs and subtly dramatizes everyday situations to facilitate the examination of the underlying mechanisms of social relations, conflicts and communication and interrogates our notions of subjectivity, interiority and exteriority. Her work was shown in galleries and museums and in film festivals in Europe, the USA, Canada and Asia. She has received numerous grants and awards and her work is in several private and public collections in both North America and Europe. e.g. the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and Berlinische Galerie in Berlin. Hoffmann received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Hochschule der Künste, Berlin and attended the California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles and the Rijksakademie van beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam. www.bettinahoffmann.net 

ALEX J MORENO currently works out of New York. He has collaborated with The PIT, Dixon Place, IATI Theater, NYU Writers lab, Columbia's MFA Directors & Writers program, the Robert Moss Theater, and The New York International Fringe Festival. Focusing mainly on creating new works for the modern day canon: writing, devising, and improvisation has become a part of his process towards each creation. In Miami he studied Theater at Florida International University and would go on to help establish "The Front Yard Theater Collective" a Miami based Improv & Sketch group that currently works with the City of Miami. www.alexjmoreno.com

Triunfadela en NYC

Domingo 21 de junio, Nueva York.  Alto Manhattan, Calle 145 y Broadway, enclave dominicano.  Cierre del Festival de Teatro del Comisionado de Cultura Dominicano con Triunfadela, de El Ciervo Encantado.  Presentación pautada para las 6:30pm, hora inusual para convocar en el teatro hispano de Nueva York.  Además llueve un pelín: la presentación comienza pasadas las siete.  Al subir hacia el segundo piso donde se encuentra el teatro, en las escaleras se ven letreros alusivos a concentraciones, marchas como “Pa’ lo que sea” o “Fieles a nuestros principios”.  

Se inicia la función como una toma abierta.  Se proyecta el documental Materia Prima, de Sergio Fernandez Borras, sobre una marcha en La Habana.  Pancartas con los cinco héroes cubanos, el monumento Martí; dos mujeres llevando gorras venezolanas.  Calles inundadas de gente, de caras lindas como cantaba el gran Maelo.  En el video se juntan el discurso oficial y el carnaval batjiano, seriedad e irreverencia, compromiso y juerga.  

Termina el video y comienza la toma cerrada. Aparece Porompompón, líder que se dirige a los manifestantes: nosotros.   Posteriormente nosotros nos convertimos en líderes y nos dirigimos al pueblo.  La palabra toma otros matices; no es que pierda su significado: es que se encuentra con otros significados.  Es reunirse en el acto “formal” y hablar sobre todo lo que queramos y podamos y a fuerza de palabra desarrollamos un mundo alterno.

Mariela Brito es una actriz excelente. Al final de la pieza recibe un montón de aplausos más que merecidos.  Su Porompompón con sus pausas, movimientos, entonaciones, miradas es uno de esos trabajos meticulosos que celebran el oficio de la actuación.

Otro punto a remarcar.  El montaje de Triunfadela es sencillo; no obstante, su conceptualización es profunda por lo que se puede leer desde diversas ópticas.  Al terminar la función alguien gritó “¡Viva Fidel!” mientras que un amigo se me acercó para decirme “Igual que tu Maduro”.   

Carlos Sánchez al final tomó la palabra e insistió aclaró que era una obra que se presenta en La Habana -no Miami- porque la función del artista es criticar su contexto.
