Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater
proudly announces a new version of one of its most popular and enduring plays: EL BOLERO FUE MI RUINA. Based on the story
“Loca la de la locura,” by
Puerto Rican author Manuel Ramos Otero, it is the unfor-gettable story of a
nightclub entertainer and self-fashioned femme fatale, and of the terrible turn
that landed her in prison. The new production —running in strictly limited
engagement June 1st through June 30th— features a new
English translation, an expanded cast, new and unplugged torch songs, boleros,
and guarachas, and new audiovisual elements. Text in English. Songs in Spanish.
Dual-language supertitles. Don’t miss it! Performances at Pregones Theater, 575
Walton Avenue, in The Bronx. Tickets at pregonesprtt.org or by phone at 718-585-1202.
EL
BOLERO WAS MY DOWNFALL is
a tribute to a great queer Puerto Rican writer, drenched in sequin, song, and
the irreverence of survival. It provides a platform for all audiences to
revisit or discover the world of Manuel Ramos Otero, and to experience the rich
cultural expanse of jukebox (vellonera) and bolero! Since its Spanish language
premiere in 1997, EL BOLERO has had more than 100 performances in 5 different
countries and triggered dozens of critical dialogues around the subjects of
colonialism, migration, queer identities, and becoming political.
