El Barrio, NY: East Harlem Artists demand reopening of community theater closed by EDC!

Press Conference
Wednesday, June 26th at 11am
Julia de Burgos Latino Cultural Center
106th Street Lexington Avenue
New York, NY

We, artists, residents and community leaders of El Barrio have gathered here today to dramatize the irrefutable fact that we have been locked out of el teatro at the Julia de Burgos Latino Cultural Center for almost four years! In addition, since Taller Boricua/Puerto Rican Workshop Inc. was unceremoniously evicted from the community events room by the NYC Economic Development Corp. we have been locked out of the space for almost two years! This cannot continue!

El Teatro and the community events room at the Julia de Burgos Latino Cultural Center are important assets essential to the economic vitality of local businesses and the artists and residents who use the spaces to generate income. Artists create jobs! As long as these spaces are padlocked no jobs will be created in El Barrio. El teatro and community space must be reopened!

Until such time, PRIDA (Puerto Rican Institute for Development of the Arts), PRIDE (Puerto Rican Intercultural Drama Ensemble), Agüeybana Productions and VirtualBoricua.org, announce the opening of the Julia de Burgos Outdoor Teatro on the corner of 106th Street and Lexington Avenue. We call upon our fellow artists to join us here every Saturday from 4 to 6 PM to showcase the work they could perform if el teatro was open! La comunidad has been locked out, but you cannot stop us from performing. The show will go on!
